Sunset over the Kalindi river at Nettara, Thirunelly, Wayanad

Stay at Nettara Gramam, Thirunelly

Koomankolly Heritage Resort is a 5-minute walk from Nettara Bridge, Nettara village and the Nettara view point, with a free guided village walk for every guest.

The quiet village everyone is talking about

Nettara is a small village about 1.5 km from the Thirunelli Maha Vishnu Temple, tucked between the Brahmagiri hills and the Kalindi river in north Wayanad. Paddy and arecanut fields, tea gardens, a clear river and an easy, unhurried village life give it an unspoiled, old-Kerala feel that has made it one of Wayanad’s newest favourite stops.

In October 2026, Kerala Tourism added Nettara to its new Thirunelli “Life Experience Trail”, which takes visitors from the temple to Nettara for riverside time, walks along the paddy fields and a visit to a traditional thatched Wayanad home.

At Koomankolly, Nettara is our neighbourhood. The bridge is right in front of the resort, and the village and view point are less than five minutes’ walk from reception, so you can be on the bridge for sunrise before most visitors have left their hotels.

Nettara Bridge

Nettara Bridge with the Brahmagiri hills behind, Thirunelly, Wayanad

The blue-railed Nettara Bridge crosses the Kalindi river with the green slopes of the Brahmagiri hills rising straight ahead. It’s the photo everyone takes, and the best light is early morning and late afternoon.

The bridge has a story too. An earlier bridge here was washed away in the 2006 monsoon, and for years villagers crossed the river on bamboo-and-rope bridges that had to be rebuilt after every flood. Today’s concrete bridge finally gave Nettara a safe, year-round link to Thirunelli town, its schools and hospital.

Nettara view point

Paddy fields and misty Brahmagiri hills from the Nettara view point

A short walk along the field paths opens up a wide view across Nettara’s paddy fields and arecanut groves to the Brahmagiri range, which rises to 1,608 m on the Kerala–Karnataka border. Come at dawn, when mist hangs over the fields, or at sunset, when the hills turn gold.

From the resort: under 5 minutes on foot.

The Kalindi river

Fed by streams from the Brahmagiri forests, the Kalindi flows past Nettara over smooth stones, shallow and crystal clear in the dry months. Sit on the bank, dip your feet, and listen to the water. It’s the same river you see from the bridge and from our huts.

During the monsoon (June to September) the river runs high and fast. Please enjoy it from the bridge and the banks, and don’t enter the water.

Guided Nettara village walk

Free for all our guests, as part of your stay. See Nettara the way locals do, with a guide from the resort. The walk takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, starts and ends at our reception, and runs in the early morning or late afternoon.

  1. Nettara Bridge: river views, the Brahmagiri skyline and the story of the bridge.
  2. Kalindi riverbank: a quiet stop by the clear water (skipped when the river is high).
  3. Paddy-field paths: walk the bunds between the fields and learn how rice is grown here.
  4. Nettara view point: the wide view across the valley to the hills, best at sunrise or sunset.
  5. Village lanes: arecanut groves, tea gardens and traditional homes.
  6. Back at the resort, with time to ask your guide anything.

Walking with respect. Nettara is home to Adiya, Kurumba and Kakkaya families. Please ask before photographing people or homes, stay on the paths, and carry your plastic back with you. The area borders elephant country, so walks go out in daylight and always with a guide.

Wear: comfortable shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Book: just ask at reception, or mention it on WhatsApp when you reserve your stay.
